More About Melon Hammers

Hammers, as would be expected, have their origins in construction with the primary use of striking or hitting. It’s believed Chinese hammers date back more than 5000 years and were originally made of heavy wood. The dawning of the Metal Ages saw them being made out of bronze, iron and eventually a variety of other metal alloys. Traditionally they were made of solid metal so were extremely heavy but today the martial arts hammers are made from hollow metal for training and performance.

In the early days of martial-hammer use, the hammers were still solid so required an enormous amount of strength to train with hence the Chinese saying "A general using a hammer cannot be overcome with physical strength."

There are a wide variety of hammers that have evolved for use in martial combat from the long-handled single hammer to the chain hammer and the short-handled hammer. The short-handled hammers are usually used in pairs and Melon hammers are one of the most common styles of short-handled hammer weapon. That said, there are still many other hammer head styles so named for their appearance such as Standing Melon, Lying Melon, Iron Melon, Octagonal, Golden, Silver, Square and so on.

Whatever the head style, short-handled hammer handles should not extend past the elbow when they are held in the hand. The techniques most commonly used for hammer forms, no matter what the martial style, are wielding, smashing and striking. They were used in battle-style fights but also for protection. It’s said that paid guards would carry them to protect their employers, and monks would carry them to protect themselves. Apparently the Shaolin monks were incredibly adept at using the hammers to the extent that they could knock an opponent unconscious without killing him.

Today, we use the Melon Hammers to embrace the traditional arts and hope that these hammers will offer you a wonderful opportunity to explore one of the earliest weapon forms to evolve past the idea of using a stick.
