More About Pudao
The Chinese Pudao, originally a weapon used by line-infantry, first made an appearance sometime in the Song dynasty. Coming from humble origins, it was believed that the Pudao’s first incarnations were simply old Dao blades that were attached to agricultural equipment by farmers, bandits, rebels and the like. This recognisability of the blade as an outlaw’s weapon means the Pudao has enjoyed the spotlight in old literature, plays and poems. Because of its crude, practical and unregulated structure, representations of Pudao have been recorded in many variations including one-handed, two-handed, and equal-blade-to-handle ratios. It is also why the weapon was not initially considered as military grade. However, today the term Pudao generally refers to the polearm variation.

The blade over time developed a somewhat gruesome moniker, the “Horsecutter Blade”, and it is speculated that the long blades and handles of the Pudao were instrumental in defending against heavily armoured cavalry charges. By slicing at the charging horses’ legs, the Pudao line infantry were able to stifle what would otherwise have been a devastating attack. These stories were said to originate with the exploits of the Song General and Chinese Folk Hero Yue Fei, who’s army famously wielded the Pudao to great effect against the Jurchen cataphract cavalry during the Song-Jurchen wars. By the beginning of the following Ming period the nickname “Horsecutter Blade” had stuck, and even saw widespread use through military records.
